Check if a site is secure in Shift Browser

  • Updated

Shift Browser keeps you safe by alerting you when a website is untrustworthy or lacks a secure connection. You can check any site's safety by clicking the security info icon in your search bar. Shift automatically flags dangerous sites to protect your data and privacy while you work.

Understanding security icons in Shift Browser

Your safety is a baseline expectation. Shift uses clear visual cues to let you know if a site is safe or if it might put your data at risk. When you visit a page, the browser checks for a valid security certificate and changes the icon Safe Connection.svg to reflect the site's status.

How to check the security info icon

It's easy to verify a site's status at a glance. Follow these steps to check your connection:

  1. Open a web page in Shift.

  2. Look at the security symbol in your search bar.

  3. A Default Lock Safe Connection.svg icon means the site is secure.

  4. A Warning or Dangerous Not Secure.svg icon means the site isn't secure.

  5. Click the icon to see a detailed status report.

How to view site information

If you need more detail about a page, you can access the site information panel. This provides a look at how the site handles your data.

  1. Open your web page in Shift.

  2. Click on the Site Information icon next to the URL.

  3. Review the summary of the site's privacy settings.

  4. Check your cookies, site data, and specific page permissions.

Pro tips for a secure flow

We want to make sure your experience is seamless and protected. You can customize how Shift handles unencrypted sites to add an extra layer of safety.

  • Enable Secure Connections: Go to Advanced Settings, then the Privacy & Security page.

  • Toggle Security: Under the Security section, turn on Always use secure connections.

  • HTTPS Warnings: When this is active, Shift will show a "Connection is not secure" warning if a site doesn't support modern encryption.
