New Things
- New “Copy Page Address” Option in App Menu: You can now right-click a non-integrated app and select Copy Page Address to quickly copy the URL of the active app tab or home tab. If no tab is active, the option appears but is greyed out.
- Discover More Extensions Link Added: The Extensions page now includes a link to the Chrome Web Store, making it easier to browse and install additional extensions. The link is always visible and styled consistently in both light and dark mode.
- New Tab Added to Quick Settings: You can now open a new tab directly from Quick Settings (above New Window), complete with the keyboard shortcut shown — Cmd + T on Mac and Ctrl + T on Windows. Selecting it opens a new tab.
- Shift Added to Import Options: Shift now appears as a valid browser profile when importing data. You can import bookmarks, passwords, and settings directly from Shift into the new updated version.
Notable Updates
- Auto-Scroll to New Active Tab: When a new tab opens outside the visible area, Shift now automatically scrolls the tab strip (both horizontal and vertical) so the active tab is always in view. This works for both regular and app tab strips.
- Reopen Closed Tab Restores Last Location: Using Ctrl + Shift + T (Windows) now reopens a closed tab in its original position within the tab strip and space, instead of always placing it at the end.
- Keyboard Shortcuts Disabled in Edit Mode: Most keyboard shortcuts are now disabled while Edit Mode is active (or during onboarding), preventing accidental actions. Only developer tools (Ctrl + Shift + I on Windows) remain available.
- Improved Accessibility with ARIA Labels: All Modular Components and Layout Groups now include ARIA labels, making Shift more accessible to screen readers and improving automated testing. Labels clearly identify component type or placement (e.g., Space Switcher, Left Bar #1).
Bugs Fixed
Omnibox & Focus Fixes
- New Tabs Always Focus the Omnibox: Fixed an issue where the first new tab created with Cmd + T (Mac) or Ctrl + T (Windows) after opening an app didn’t focus the omnibox. All new tabs now correctly open with the omnibox in focus.
- Find-in-Page Pop-up Now Focuses Correctly: Fixed an issue where pressing Ctrl + F (Windows) or Cmd + F (Mac) would send text to the omnibox instead of the Find in Page pop-up. The search field now gains focus as expected.
- Dialog Inputs Retain Focus After Window Blur: Fixed an issue where, after switching away from and back to Shift, the omnibox would steal focus from input fields inside open dialogs. Input fields now correctly regain focus when the window is refocused.
- Quick Settings No Longer Triggers Omnibox Focus: Fixed an issue where opening Quick Settings would incorrectly focus the omnibox. The omnibox now stays unaffected when Quick Settings is opened.
- Omnibox No Longer Focuses on IA Clicks: Fixed an issue where clicking an open Integrated App caused the omnibox to incorrectly gain focus. The omnibox now remains unfocused as expected.
Core Functionality & Stability
- Automatic Update Checks Restored: Fixed an issue where Shift wouldn’t always check for updates automatically after installation. Updates now run in the background as expected, without needing to open Advanced Settings.
- Geolocation Permissions Fixed: Fixed an issue where granting a website access to location did not actually share the user’s location. Sites now correctly recognize and use geolocation permissions.
Onboarding & Setup
- No More Restore Dialog During Onboarding: Fixed an issue where users could see a “Restore pages” prompt if the browser crashed during onboarding. The restore dialog no longer appears in this flow.
- Carbon Meter Sync Fixed on Mac: Addressed an issue where community impact data in the carbon meter stopped updating after the first day on Mac installations. The carbon meter now refreshes daily as expected.
Spaces & App Management
- Space Avatars No Longer Disappear on Edit: Fixed an issue where editing a Space would remove the user avatar pulled from the anchor app (e.g., Gmail). Avatars now remain intact unless the icon is intentionally changed.
- Suggested Second Space Label Fixed: Resolved an issue where deleting the pre-generated Suggested Second Space caused newly created spaces to incorrectly adopt that label. The label now only appears for the intended pre-generated space.
- Unnecessary Scrollbar Removed in Space Settings: Fixed an issue where the Edit App dialog showed an awkward scrollbar on the Space Settings tab even when no scrolling was needed. The dialog now displays cleanly without extra scrollbars.
UI & Design Polish
- Accounts and Preferences Label Corrected: Fixed an issue in Advanced Settings where the Accounts and Preferences hover state and title were misaligned and displayed incorrectly. The label and spacing now match the intended design.
- Empty Containers Now Display Correctly in Edit Mode: Fixed an issue where empty containers appeared too small and distorted when outlined with a dotted border. Containers now maintain a minimum size for consistent visuals.
- Task Manager Now Opens in Front: Fixed an issue where launching Task Manager from the Shift tray icon caused it to open behind the browser window. Task Manager now opens on top as expected, with the menu label corrected for consistency.
