Notable Updates
- Clear guidance when entering Full Screen on Windows: When Full Screen mode is activated, a brief on-screen prompt now appears showing how to exit (for example, “Press Esc to exit full screen”), then fades away automatically.
- Close tabs faster from any tab strip: You can now right-click any tab (in both Main and App tab strips) to Close Other Tabs or Close Tabs to the Right. In vertical layouts, the option appears as Close Tabs Below, making it easier to clean up tabs without losing your place.
- Pinch to zoom with your trackpad: Use two-finger pinch gestures to zoom in and out on web content, centered where you pinch, on both Mac and Windows (where supported).
- Quickly reveal hidden sidebars: When a sidebar is collapsed, you can now hover near the edge of the window to temporarily open it, making it faster to access your bars without clicking.
- Easier Space awareness and switching in Edit Mode: When editing your layout, you can now clearly see which Space you’re in and switch to another active Space directly from the App tab.
- Clear feedback when a layout zone is full: In Edit Mode, you’ll now see a visual indicator when a layout zone has reached its maximum number of bars (up to 3 per zone on the left, right, top, or bottom), so you know right away when you can’t add more.
Bugs Fixed
Spaces & Layout
- Custom layouts no longer reset when adding apps: In some edge cases, adding an app in Edit Mode could cause custom layouts to revert to the default. This has been fixed, so your layout now stays intact when adding apps.
- Fixed unexpected Space reordering while editing: In some cases, editing a Space from the drawer could cause Spaces to change order when closing the editor. This issue has been resolved, and Space order will now remain consistent.
- Color picker is now usable in Edit Space: You can once again click and select colors when customizing a Space avatar.
Tabs & Navigation
- New Tab button is always accessible: The New Tab button no longer disappears when many tabs are open and now stays visible at the end of the tab strip.
- Fixed disappearing tabs when moving between windows: Dragging a tab from one Shift window to another now reliably adds it to the tab strip, preventing tabs from vanishing after the move.
- Discarded tabs now behave correctly after restart: Tabs that were unloaded to save memory no longer appear to load indefinitely and will resume normally when selected.
- Improved stability when restoring unloaded tabs: Fixed a crash that could occur when navigating back to tabs that were aggressively discarded to save memory.
- Improved stability when switching tabs: Fixed a crash that could cause Shift to unexpectedly close when clicking between tabs, prompting a restore on restart.
- Fixed swipe navigation on Mac and Windows: You can now use swipe gestures to move back and forward through your browsing history in Shift, matching the behavior you’d expect from browsers like Chrome and Safari.
- Cleaner app bar layout at smaller window sizes: The Add App button now behaves correctly when space is limited, appearing fully or moving into the overflow menu instead of being partially cut off.
- Snap Layout support restored on macOS: Hovering over the green window button now shows Snap Layout options, matching expected behavior from other browsers like Chrome.
Keyboard, Gestures & Input
- Hard reload now works consistently with DevTools open: The Ctrl + Shift + R shortcut now triggers a hard reload regardless of how DevTools is opened, including when using Inspect Element.
- Cmd + F now works correctly in Google Sheets on Mac: Using Find in page now opens Google Sheets’ native search instead of Shift’s page search, so you can search within cells as expected.
- Swipe navigation no longer interferes with Google Sheets: Trackpad swipe gestures are now handled correctly in Google Sheets, preventing accidental page navigation when moving quickly between cells.
- Improved keyboard navigation in full-screen panels: Tab and Shift+Tab navigation now cycles correctly through visible elements, making it easier to move through settings and full-screen panels using the keyboard.
Notifications, Permissions & Dialogs
- Notification permission prompts now appear correctly: System notification prompts now open on the same screen as Shift and are fully visible, so you can clearly see which app is requesting permission before allowing or blocking it.
- Permission dialogs now appear correctly on first launch: On fresh installs, permission prompts now open fully within the Shift window instead of appearing off-screen.
- Print dialog now appears in the correct position: On first launch, the Print dialog now opens in the expected location instead of appearing off to the side in supported layouts.
Bookmarks & Apps
- Improved stability when opening bookmarks: Fixed a crash that could occur when opening a bookmark from the Bookmark Manager.
- Fixed incorrect unread counts for WhatsApp: The WhatsApp app badge now shows the correct number of unread messages, so notification counts are accurate.
- Fixed an issue with multiple Gmail accounts in the Email App: Secondary Gmail apps will no longer automatically log into your primary account if login is skipped, helping keep accounts separate and predictable.
- Fixed lingering folder highlight when rearranging bookmarks: In some cases, moving bookmarks within a folder could cause the last-hovered subfolder to remain highlighted even after the cursor moved away. This has been fixed, so drag-and-drop behavior now responds correctly and matches expected browser behavior.
Settings, Sync & Install
- Reset Settings now applies to all Spaces: Resetting settings will now clear cookies and log you out of apps across all Spaces, not just the primary one, for a more consistent reset experience.
- Reset Settings now takes effect immediately: After resetting settings, apps and websites now log out right away without requiring a manual page refresh.
- Improved stability when managing Sync settings: Fixed a crash that could occur when turning off Sync while multiple Shift windows were open.
- Cleaner uninstall experience: Shift is now fully removed from system default app options after uninstalling, so it no longer appears as a selectable default browser.
- Fixed a crash on first launch after installation (Windows): Shift no longer crashes immediately after install on Windows, ensuring a successful first launch.
Note: The “Open links in default browser” option has been temporarily rolled back while improvements are underway. This option will return in a future update.
