Shift AI: Privacy & Security

  • Updated

Shift Browser keeps your data private by using Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy and anonymous identifiers. Your AI Chat conversations aren't tied to your personal Shift account identity, and third-party AI models never see who you are. We built Shift AI to help you work faster without compromising your digital security.

**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.

How Shift Browser protects your data

We designed Shift AI with a simple principle: you should get helpful assistance without losing control over your data. This native intelligence includes both AI Chat and the Intelligent Omnibox. Here's how we keep your information safe.

AI Chat: Privacy by design

AI Chat avoids tying your conversations to your personal identity. We use Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy so that third-party model providers, like OpenAI, only receive your question and page context. They don't receive your name, email, or any stable identifier that could link the message back to you.

We’ve built in clear controls for deleting conversations, as well as special handling for incognito windows. When it comes to analytics, we focus on usage patterns, not message content.

Your Chat Client ID

Every installation of Shift Browser generates a random Chat Client ID. This ID stays on your device and isn't linked to your Shift account. Its only job is to help the browser find and delete your chat history when you ask it to. It's never used for ads or profiling.

We use it in the chat storage layer to:

  • Group your conversations together for history and restore,
  • Find all conversations associated with you when you:
    • Delete them from History
    • Submit a data deletion request
    • Uninstall Shift.

You can find your Chat Client ID by:

  1. Open AI Chat by clicking the AI icon
  2. Click the three-dot icon to open the options menu.
  3. Select 'Settings' from the list.
  4. Toggle to the "About You" page of settings.
  5. At the bottom of the modal, click 'Copy' to copy your Chat Client ID.
  6. Close the modal.
GIf shows user selecting Settings from the three-dot menu in AI Chat, toggling to the About You settings page and copying their Chat Client ID before closing the modal.

Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy: How your messages reach the AI

All AI Chat requests go through Cloudflare’s Privacy Proxy. That means:

  • Third‑party model providers do not see your Shift identity
  • By default, there is no central identity linkage between your Shift account and your AI conversations
  • The Chat Client ID stays on the client and our chat storage layer and is not sent to LLM providers

In practice, this means external AI services receive the text of your question and relevant page context, but not a stable identifier that ties those messages to you as an individual Shift user.

Use Incognito for total privacy

When you use AI Chat in an incognito window, your data is even more protected:

  1. Clean Slate: Each window starts with no prior history.
  2. No Persistence: Chats aren't saved to your history and are discarded when the window closes.
  3. No Cross-Contamination: Incognito sessions never show up in your regular history.
  4. No Server Storage: These chats aren't associated with your ID and are never stored on our servers.

If you want conversations that leave no lasting trace—either on the device’s chat history or our servers—use AI Chat in an incognito window.

Managing your data and deletions

You're always in control of what Shift Browser remembers. You can delete specific conversations from your history, which removes the data from our storage entirely.

If you want a full data deletion, you can find your Chat Client ID in your AI Chat Settings and share it with our support team. We'll use it to locate and clear all associated data across our systems. This gives you a way to exercise data deletion rights without us needing to centrally tie chats to your named account.

When you uninstall Shift, the browser makes a best-effort request to clear this data automatically, without delaying or blocking the uninstall process.

What’s tracked for analytics (and what isn’t)

We use analytics to understand how AI Chat is performing and how it’s being used, but we carefully limit what we collect. AI Chat tracking focuses on collecting events such as when the assistant is opened or closed, where it’s opened from, how often new chats are opened and how long they last, and whether or not you’re using context chips.

We’re never looking at the message content itself, so your chats stay private to you. Shift wants to know how the feature is used and how it performs, so even your Chat Client ID is excluded from analytics.

Intelligent Omnibox safety

The Intelligent Omnibox helps you find bookmarks and history faster by understanding your intent. It doesn't store your raw query text long-term. Instead, it only processes what you type in real-time to decide if you're trying to navigate to a site or ask a question.

Analytics and transparency

We use behavioral analytics to improve Shift Browser, but we don't track your message content. We look at how often features are used, session durations, and performance metrics like "time to first token." We don't log your raw query strings or the full text of your conversations.
