Notable Updates
Browser Engine & Core
- Updated Chromium engine: Shift is now based on Chromium 144, bringing you the latest security fixes and web compatibility improvements from upstream Chrome.
Layout & UI
- Restored macOS menu bar options: On Mac, common system menu options like Hide Shift, Hide Others, spelling and grammar tools, substitutions, transformations, speech controls, and additional window management options (like tiling and "Bring All to Front") are now available again in the menu bar.
- Smoother window drag behavior: When you drag the last tab out of a Shift window to create a new window, the transition is now smoother.
- More polished floating sidebar: The floating sidebar now has more visual depth, so it stands out from the main window, and it is no longer resizable in hover mode. The non-floating sidebar experience stays the same.
- Instant updates in the Edit Space drawer: Changes you make to a Space, such as its name, color, avatar, or theme, now update live as you adjust them in the Edit Space drawer instead of waiting for a final save. Space name validation also prevents blank or duplicate names from being saved by accident.
Bookmarks & Navigation
- Easier bookmark reordering: You can now drag bookmarks into the empty area at the end of the bookmarks bar. The whole bar acts as a drop target, so it's simpler to add or rearrange items.
Settings
- Passwords in Quick Settings: The Quick Settings drawer now includes a Passwords option between Extensions and History. Selecting it opens the Passwords panel and closes Quick Settings, so you can quickly manage saved passwords without going through Advanced Settings.
- Updated Smart Links settings: The "Open Links in Apps" section in Advanced Settings has been renamed to "Smart Links" and now includes a "Learn more" link to the support article, along with clearer descriptions for the Custom option.
Onboarding
- Clearer Space naming in onboarding: When you're setting up or migrating Spaces during onboarding, Shift now checks Space names in real time. Duplicate names are highlighted with an inline "Unique Space names must be used." message, and you can only continue once each Space has a unique name, making Spaces easier to tell apart later.
- Reorder Spaces during onboarding: When you are setting up Spaces in onboarding, you can now drag and drop them to change their order. This makes it easy to put your most important Space first so it opens by default, and its bookmarks appear in the most prominent spot.
- Delete any Space during onboarding: You can now delete any Space during onboarding setup, including the first one. As long as you have more than one Space, a delete icon appears on each. This gives you more control over which Spaces you keep when migrating or setting up Shift.
- Cleaner onboarding layout: During Space setup in onboarding, the delete (trash) icon now only appears when you hover over or focus on a Space, keeping the layout less cluttered.
Bugs Fixed
Crashes & Stability
- Crash when opening HubSpot extension: Fixed a crash that could occur when opening the HubSpot extension in Shift on macOS. The browser now stays stable even if the extension runs into problems.
- Crash when running links with DevTools minimized: Fixed a crash that could occur when running an action while both the browser window and DevTools were minimized. It now completes successfully without causing the browser to close.
Tabs & Navigation
- Links from LinkedIn messages now open correctly: Fixed an issue where clicking an external link in a LinkedIn message (both as an App and in a Tab) could sometimes open a "Page not found" page instead of the expected "Leaving LinkedIn" redirect.
- Esc key exits fullscreen on Mac: You can now press Esc once to exit fullscreen mode on macOS, matching standard Mac behavior. A long press is no longer required.
- Horizontal scroll no longer triggers back/forward navigation on Mac: Fixed an issue where using horizontal scroll (Shift + scroll wheel or a mouse's second scroll wheel) on macOS would navigate the tab back or forward instead of scrolling the page.
- Incognito window closes when last tab closes: Closing the last tab in an Incognito window now closes the entire window, matching expected behavior. Regular windows are unchanged.
- Omnibox refocuses after closing popovers and drawers: After interacting with Quick Settings, extension popovers, downloads, or other browser UI elements, focus now correctly returns to the address bar if you were using it before. Also fixes the address bar not refocusing after minimizing and restoring Shift.
- More consistent address bar focus after minimizing: Improved how the address bar behaves when you minimize and reopen Shift so that its focus state more reliably matches what you were doing before minimizing, especially on new tab pages.
- URL text truncates with ellipsis in the address bar: When a URL is longer than the address bar width, the text now truncates with an ellipsis instead of being abruptly clipped.
Bookmarks & Imports
- Bookmark bar visibility respected after restart: Fixed an issue where the bookmark bar could reappear after relaunch, even when Show Bookmark Bar was turned off in Quick Settings. The bookmark bar now stays hidden across restarts when this option is disabled.
- Drag-and-drop indicators fixed for protected bookmarks: Fixed an issue where drag-and-drop target indicators appeared on protected bookmark folders (like Space root folders) in the Bookmarks Manager, even though dropping on them had no effect.
Layout & UI
- Faster response when refocusing Shift on Mac: Fixed an issue where clicking anything in Shift after switching back from another app could take over a second to register, especially after the browser had been running for a while with many tabs open.
- Taskbar drag areas expanded: Fixed an issue where certain padding areas around the taskbar (near the apps button and before the first tab) could not be used to drag the window.
- Pinch-to-zoom now works correctly: Pinch-to-zoom now zooms into the page at the cursor location without changing the page's zoom factor, matching Chrome's behavior.
- Name Window menu item added on macOS: The Window > "Name Window..." menu item is now available on macOS, letting you name your windows so they are easier to identify in the Dock.
- Correct file icons on Windows: Files set to open with Shift (like HTML or PDF) now show the Shift icon instead of the default Chromium icon on Windows.
- Find in Sheet working again on macOS: Fixed an issue where pressing Cmd+F in Google Sheets on macOS opened the browser's Find bar instead of the in-page "Find in sheet" dialog.
Extensions
- 1Password extension can now be unpinned: Fixed an issue where the 1Password extension could not be unpinned from the toolbar after being opened during the same session it was installed.
- Pinned extensions display correctly in grid layouts: Fixed an issue where pinned extensions would not display or be clickable when the layout placed them in a grid.
Settings
- Google Translate option hidden in Advanced Settings: Hid the non-functional "Use Google Translate" section from Advanced Settings > Languages until proper translation support is available.
Add-ons & Integrated Apps
- IA sidebar and webview zoom fixed: Fixed an issue where zooming in Integrated Apps (like Package Tracker, Maps, Business Directory) would scale the sidebar and webview separately. Zoom is now disabled for the sidebar when a webview overlay is present, preventing the mismatch.
- Maps and Package Tracker IAs load correctly with "Continue where you left off": Fixed an issue where Integrated Apps without a direct URL (like Maps or Package Tracker) would show a blank webview when "Continue where you left off" was enabled in startup settings.
- Shopping features work after toggling the add-on off and back on: Fixed an issue where coupon application and price comparison stopped working if the Shopping add-on was toggled off and then back on.
- Coupon summary now reflects the correct cart discount: Fixed an issue where the coupon summary dialog could show incorrect totals when multiple coupons were applied, because discounted prices were being used as the original price for subsequent coupons.
- Coupon application no longer runs on an empty cart: Fixed an issue where the coupon application process could run indefinitely on an empty cart page. The process now detects an empty cart and stops within 15 seconds.
- Shopping add-on per-feature settings: The Shopping Add-on in Advanced Settings now has separate toggles for Suggest Coupons and Compare Prices, so you can enable or disable each feature independently.
- Shopping Hub links no longer trigger the Smart Links dialog: Fixed an issue where clicking a store link in the Shopping Hub could trigger the Smart Links "install app" dialog. Links from the Shopping Hub now open directly in a new tab.
Onboarding
- Back button removed during v9 migration onboarding: Removed the back button during the v9 migration onboarding flow to prevent issues that could occur when backtracking through steps, such as encountering blank Spaces.
- Spaces no longer overlap the Next button in onboarding: Fixed an issue where creating or importing many Spaces during onboarding could cause the list to overlap with the Next button. The list now scrolls properly.
- Notifications no longer appear during onboarding: Fixed an issue where toast notification messages could appear while a user was still going through onboarding. Notifications now wait until onboarding is complete.
