Shift 144.1.0 | Released 2026-04-17

  • Updated

Notable Updates

Quick Settings and layout

  • Change in default sidebar behavior. The "show sidebar on hover" behaviour is now off by default but can always be turned off in Advanced Settings.

Onboarding, default browser, and Sync

  • The default browser is easier to set during onboarding. You can now set Shift as your default browser during onboarding, reducing setup steps.
  • Fixed default browser setting issues on Windows. Resolved cases where links could still open in Edge even after choosing a different default browser behavior.
  • More reliable onboarding after sign-in. Fixed a blank screen issue after sign-in when closing the Manage Sync dialog, so onboarding progress is not lost.
  • More consistent Sync behavior. Fixed an issue where settings changes were not syncing across devices, even when Sync was enabled.

Address bar and navigation

  • Address bar focus is smarter. Updated omnibox focus logic so it can return you to your last cursor position in more cases (instead of always selecting all text), making quick edits easier.
  • Fixed focus loss while typing. Resolved an issue where the address bar could lose focus during fast typing, preventing missed keystrokes.
  • Improved keyboard behavior. The Open Location shortcut now selects address bar text more consistently when the address bar is already active.
  • More complete omnibox info in more places. Address information is now shown across apps, allowing for easy access to your URL and the ability to make small changes

Bugs Fixed

Crashes and stability

  • Fixed a crash when creating a new in-app tab, improving stability for users who rely on in-app browsing views.
  • Fixed a macOS crash involving extensions with a side panel, making extension-based workflows more reliable.
  • Fixed a crash on Mac ARM during Google authentication flows when opening a Jira link while logged out, so sign-in edge cases are less likely to close Shift unexpectedly.

Tabs, windows, and split view

  • Open in a new window respects Shift. Fixed an issue where “Open Links in New Window” could open in the default browser even when you expected Shift, reducing confusion when working across windows.

Extensions

  • Pinned extensions are more consistent. Fixed issues where extensions could appear pinned incorrectly, pin/unpin behavior was inconsistent, or pinned icons were not clickable (including cases like Mail Tracker).
  • Tab icons update more reliably. Fixed cases where favicons were slow to update or did not update, making it easier to identify tabs at a glance.

Integrated apps and custom apps

  • Find in Page is available again in more integrated apps. Fixed an issue where Find in Page did not appear in certain integrated apps, restoring expected browsing tools.
  • Custom app setup is less likely to get stuck. Fixed cases where adding or editing a custom app could result in a locked state, so Build Your Browser workflows are smoother.

Keyboard shortcuts and macOS

  • Fixed Windows keyboard shortcut navigation for Spaces, so switching Spaces works as expected.(Next Space: Ctrl + Alt + ], Previous Space: Ctrl + Alt + [
  • Fixed macOS drag-and-drop on some websites, restoring expected behavior for moving content around on the page.
  • Tabs work correctly in maximized mode on Mac. Fixed an intermittent issue preventing tabs from being added or removed while maximized.
  • Added a macOS shortcut to toggle sidebars with Cmd + S, making sidebar control faster.

Installer and onboarding polish

  • Fixed an onboarding UI issue where an Update button could appear unexpectedly, reducing confusion during setup.
  • Clearer sign-in error handling. Improved messaging when Shift can’t capture your sign-in token, so you get a clearer explanation instead of a silent failure.
