Turn off password or payment method sync

Turn off sync if you want Shift Browser to stop syncing passwords or payment methods across your devices.

What happens when you turn sync off?

Turning off sync:

  • Stops future syncing for the selected data type.
  • Keeps your saved passwords and payment methods on your current device.
  • Does not immediately remove encrypted passwords or payment data already stored on Shift's sync servers.

If you only want to stop syncing while keeping your local data, this is the recommended option.

Turn off sync

  1. Go to Quick Settings Quick Settings.svg
  2. Open Advanced Settings.
  3. Select Account and Preferences.
  4. Select Manage Sync.
  5. Turn off Passwords and/or Payment Methods.

You can disable either option independently. For example, you can continue syncing passwords while turning off payment method sync.

Reset passwords and payment data

Reset your password and payment data if you've lost your secret key and need to set up encrypted sync again.

When should you reset?

Reset is recommended if:

  • You've lost your secret key.
  • You no longer have access to a device where the secret key is already available.
  • You want to start password and payment data sync from the beginning.

If you still have access to a device where password and payment syncing is active, you usually don't need to reset. Instead, open Manage Sync to view or copy your existing secret key.

What happens when you reset?

Resetting:

  • Permanently deletes encrypted password and payment data from the sync server, and this data cannot be recovered.
  • Lets you set up password and payment syncing again with a new secret key.
  • Does not affect bookmarks, browsing history, settings, or other synced browser data.

Reset password and payment data

  1. Go to Quick Settings Quick Settings.svg
  2. Open Advanced Settings.
  3. Select Account and Preferences, then choose Manage Sync.
  4. Under Passwords and Payments Data Sync, select Reset Passwords and Payments Data.
  5. Review the confirmation message.
  6. Confirm the reset.

After the reset finishes, you can enable password and payment syncing again. Shift Browser will generate a new secret key for your device.

Note: Reset only removes encrypted password and payment data. It does not delete your Shift account or other synced browser data.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning off sync delete my passwords or payment methods from this device?

No. Turning off sync only stops future syncing. Your saved passwords and payment methods remain on your current device.

Will resetting passwords and payment data remove my bookmarks or settings?

No. Reset only affects encrypted passwords and payment data. Your bookmarks, browsing history, settings, and other synced browser data are not affected.

Should I reset if I still have one device with sync enabled?

Usually not. If you can still access a device where password and payment syncing is active, you can view or copy your existing secret key from Manage Sync instead of resetting.

Will I receive a new secret key after resetting?

Yes. After you set up password and payment syncing again, Shift Browser generates a new secret key.

Can I sync passwords without syncing payment methods?

Yes. Passwords and Payment Methods have separate sync toggles so that you can enable or disable each one independently. Note: When you first enable sync, both options are toggled on by default, but you can adjust these settings at any time.
