Sandbox/container crashes when “Open links in default browser” is enabled
Description:
When the setting to open all links in the system default browser is enabled, the active app container inside Shift crashes whenever I click a link.
Shift itself does not fully crash because the apps run in sandboxed/containerized instances. Only the affected container (for example Gmail) crashes and reloads itself automatically afterward.
Steps to Reproduce:
- Enable the option to open all links in the default browser
- Open an app inside Shift (e.g. Gmail)
- Click any link
- The app container crashes and reloads
Expected Behavior:
Links should open in the system default browser without the app container crashing.
Actual Behavior:
The sandboxed app/container crashes and reloads itself. The main Shift application remains open.
Frequency:
Occurs consistently.
Additional Notes:
This appears specifically related to the “open all links in default browser” feature and affects sandboxed app instances rather than the entire Shift application.

Hi there,
To further our investigation into this, could you please let me know your Shift version #. You can find this by opening Quick Settings > Advanced Settings > About Shift Browser.
So far I haven't been able to replicate this with Gmail (or any other app). Are there specific apps that this is happening with? Or all apps?
Also are you running Shift on Windows or Mac?
Thanks,
Cait
It says:
Shift Browser is up to date
Version 144.2.1.128 (Official Build) (64-bit)
I’m able to reproduce this with all apps as well, including Discord and Reddit.
In the Gmail container, I reset the site permissions, and now a popup appears asking whether I want to leave/close the page. If I press “Cancel,” the link works once, but on the next link there is no popup and the container crashes again.
At some point, Shift also asks whether popups should be blocked. If I check the “block popups” box and press “Leave site,” the container seems to “crash” every time afterward.
In the Discord container, resetting the site permissions/preferences did not change anything.
I’m running Shift on Windows.
Thanks!
I've passed this on to our QA team for further investigation as I have not been able to replicate this. I'll keep you updated here.
A few more questions from our QA team:
What is your default browser?
Do you have any ad blockers installed?
Do you remember the first app you clicked a link on for this to happen (Was it Gmail, discord, or reddit?)
Our team's having trouble replicating this, so the additional information would be helpful to try to recreate the original conditions.
Hey klaibsveni just following up on the questions above - this information could help us replicate the issue which is an important step in identifying a fix.
