How to set Shift Browser as your default browser

You can set Shift Browser as your default browser through the Quick Settings menu or your computer's system settings. Shift doesn't force itself as the default, so you're always in control. Once you've made the switch, every link you click will open directly in your customized Shift workspace.

Make Shift Browser your primary tool

Ready to make Shift your go-to? Whether you're on Windows or Mac, the process is quick. Setting Shift as your default ensures your workflow stays in one place without jumping between different apps.

Set Shift as the default through Quick Settings

  1. Open Shift on your computer.

  2. Click the gear icon to open Quick Settings.

  3. Scroll down the sidebar to find Set as Default browser.

  4. Click Make default.

  5. Your computer's system settings will open automatically. Follow the prompts to finish the setup.

Set Shift as the default on Windows

Windows handles defaults through the system menu. Shift will guide you right to the spot you need.

  1. Open Shift and click the gear icon for Quick Settings.

  2. Select Advanced settings.

  3. In the sidebar, go to Default browser and click Make default.

  4. When the Windows Default apps page opens, type "Shift" in the search bar.

  5. Select Shift and click Set default.

Note: On Windows 11, Shift takes you directly to the right settings page—no searching required.

Set Shift as the default on Mac

On macOS, Shift lives as a native integration that syncs perfectly with your system.

  1. Open Shift and look at the top menu bar.

  2. Click Shift and then select Settings.

  3. In the window that pops up, select General.

  4. Find the Default browser section and click Make default.

  5. Confirm the choice when your Mac asks for permission.

Tip: If Shift is not your default browser, an option will appear in Shift's Quick Settings to set it as your default browser. Simply click on the option and follow the prompts.
