All About System Settings

  • Updated

This article contains information about the System Settings, which are found in the sidebar of the Advanced Settings.

Here you will be able to make changes to settings regarding Shift and your system.

To locate System Settings, follow these steps:

  1. Locate "Quick Settings" marked by the Gear icon
  2. Within Quick Settings, locate “Advanced Settings”
  3. On the left-hand side, you will see “System”

*This image displays the Shift Advanced Settings panel. With category options on the left-hand side, the ‘System’ category is clicked on, highlighted in a darker grey with a red box around it for emphasis. The categories of this setting, which are described in this article, appear on the right-hand side.

For all selections, when a toggle is turned ON, it will be highlighted blue and the white circle will be to the right. When a toggle is turned OFF, it will be greyed out and the white circle will be to the left.

Run in Background

When this setting is turned on for any app or process, it often means that it is active and processing when you are not using it or interacting with it directly. This allows apps and processes to continue to perform tasks like: receiving notifications, syncing data or updating content.

We recommend having it on for Shift to ensure that you are seeing up-to-date notifications for your apps and emails. This process does, however, consume system resources like CPU and RAM, which could potentially affect battery life and performance. You can choose to turn this on or off depending on your needs.

Use graphics acceleration when available

Graphics Acceleration is enabled by default in Shift. If you're experiencing high GPU usage, and want to avoid this, try disabling hardware acceleration in your settings by toggling this setting OFF.

What is graphics acceleration?

Graphics acceleration is a process that uses your computer's hardware, rather than the Shift software alone, to optimize Shift's performance. Graphics acceleration helps to 'shift' processing from the CPU to other hardware units in your device such as your GPU (graphics card).

When should I use graphics acceleration?

If you have a powerful and stable GPU, enabling graphics acceleration in Shift will allow you to utilize your GPU to its full extent when you're using multiple apps, extensions, and emails. Using graphics acceleration in Shift will allow you to browse through Shift and use media apps such as YouTube or Discord in a smoother fashion. Hardware Acceleration is enabled by default in Shift.

Open your computer’s proxy settings

When you click into this setting, your system settings should open up to the “Proxy” settings.

Here you can:

Windows

Automatic Proxy Setup

  • Toggle on or off “Automatically detect settings”
  • Toggle on or off “Use setup script”

Manual Proxy Setup

  • Toggle on or off “Use a Proxy Server”

What are Proxy Settings?

Proxy settings control how your device connects to the internet through a proxy server. Instead of connecting directly, a proxy server will serve as an intermediary between what you access online and your device. The proxy will route the internet traffic through it where it can then filter, cache or modify requests before they reach their destination.
