You can import and export your saved passwords in Shift to keep your login credentials organized and accessible.
Due to a recent change with Chrome, the direct transfer of passwords from Chrome to another browser is no longer possible. This means that passwords will not be automatically imported during Onboarding and setup. To add your passwords, you will need to manually export from Chrome and upload to Shift. Keep reading for the steps.
Importing Passwords into Shift
There are two ways to import passwords into Shift:
- From a supported browser
- Using a CSV file
Supported browsers for direct import:
- Chrome *except passwords
- Edge
- Firefox
- Brave
- Vivaldi
If you use a different browser, please follow the steps to import using a CSV file.
Method 1: Import from a Supported Browser
- Click the gear icon to open Settings
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Go to the Accounts and Services tab.
- Click Advanced Settings next to "Import bookmarks and settings."
- Select your browser from the dropdown. 🔒 Important: Make sure the selected browser is closed before continuing.
- Once imported, you can manage your passwords in the Autofill and passwords section of your settings.
Method 2: Import from a CSV File
Step 1: Export your passwords to a CSV file
Example: From Chrome
- Open Chrome and go to Settings.
- Select Autofill > Passwords.
- Click the three-dot menu beside Saved Passwords.
- Click Export passwords and save the file.
For other browsers or password managers, check their Help Center for CSV export instructions.
Step 2: Import your CSV file into Shift
Make sure your CSV file uses these exact column headers: URL, Username, Password
- In Shift, click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Scroll down and open Advanced Settings.
- Go to the Autofill and passwords tab.
- Select Password Manager
- Click Settings from the left-hand side.
- Find the Import passwords section and click Select file.
- Choose your saved CSV file and click Import.
✅ Once imported, delete the CSV file from your computer to keep your data safe.
⚠️ Troubleshooting Import Issues
- Ensure your source browser is closed before importing.
- Double-check your CSV file uses the correct column headers: URL, Username, Password (e.g., update "website, user, pass" to match).
Exporting Passwords from Shift
- Click the gear icon to open Settings.
- Select Advanced Settings.
- Go to the Autofill and passwords tab.
- Select Password Manager.
- Click Settings from the left-hand side.
- Under Export passwords, click Download file.
- In the password section, click the three-dot icon next to Saved Passwords.
- Select Export passwords and save the CSV file.
⚠️ The exported file is not encrypted. Be sure to store it securely and delete it when it's no longer needed.
