When signing out of Shift, you may notice an option to “Reset browser”. This article will explain when to use that option and what impact it might have to your Shift setup and Sync.
Advanced User with Sync On
If you have an Advanced subscription with Shift and Sync is turned on, signing out of Shift and selecting the ‘Reset browser’ option will:
- Turn Sync off on that device
- Revert all data to “factory settings”, meaning all apps, spaces, and settings will be reset as if you are starting in Shift from scratch. There will be no trace of previous user data on that device, however when you log back in all synced data will be restored.
Using this option:
- When you log back in, you will be prompted to sync. We recommend turning Sync back on, especially if you might need to log out at a future point again. Having Sync on will ensure that your set up and data is preserved when logging out and in again.
- You will not have access to any Advanced features on that device until you login.
- Since Sync was turned on before selecting the “Reset browser” option, any data previously synced will be restored when logging back into Shift. So your Spaces, apps, and bookmarks will still appear in your Shift setup.
- This can be used to resolve some bugs, as all previous data and any issues with it will be set fresh. It’s also a great option if you’re using a public computer and want your Shift data removed from it.
Advanced User with Sync Off
If you have an Advanced subscription, but have Sync turned off, selecting ‘Reset browser’ will:
- Revert all data to “factory settings”, meaning all apps, spaces, and settings will be reset as if you are starting in Shift from scratch. There will be no trace of previous user data.
Using this option:
- When you log back in, Shift will be reset to new. You will need to set up any Spaces, apps, bookmarks, extensions, etc. again to rebuild your Shift setup.
- You will still have access to all of your Advanced features once you log back in.
Free User with Sync On
If you are a Free user with Sync turned on, selecting ‘Reset browser’ when signing out will:
- Turn Sync off on that device
- Revert all data to “factory settings”, meaning all apps, spaces, and settings will be reset as if you are starting in Shift from scratch. There will be no trace of previous user data on that device, however when you log back in all synced data will be restored.
Using this option:
- When you log back in, Sync will be automatically turned back on.
- Since Sync was turned on before selecting the ‘Reset browser’ option, any data previously synced will be restored when logging back into Shift. So your Spaces, apps, and bookmarks will still appear in your Shift setup.
Signing out without Resetting browser
Signing out of Shift without selecting the ‘Reset browser’ option will sign you out of your Advanced features.
Signing back in to Shift will restore your Advanced features and set up, although previous customizations to your layout will not be recovered if Sync is turned off.
