What to do if an app is having issues in Shift Browser

  • Updated

You can fix most specialized app issues in Shift by updating your software, reloading the app, or clearing your site data. If you see login errors or blank screens, these quick steps will help you get back to your deep work window without losing your setup. Start from the top and work your way down until the issue is resolved.

1. Update to the latest version of Shift Browser

We release regular updates to ensure your native integrations run fast and stay stable.

To check for updates:

  1. Navigate to Quick Settings Quick Settings.svg.
  2. Click on Advanced Settings.
  3. Select About Shift Browser.
  4. Check your version. If an update is ready, click the update button.

For more details, review the guide on how to update Shift.

2. Reload the app inside Shift Browser

If an app that lives inside your Space is not responding, a quick refresh often does the trick. You have two ways to handle this:

Option 1:

  1. Open the app.
  2. Click the Reload icon (circular arrow Reload icon).

Option 2:

  1. Double-click the App icon
    • Note: This only works if you do not have a tab strip in your App.

Both options refresh the app view within Shift without affecting any saved data.

3. Clear the stored app data in Shift Browser

This step is excellent for breaking out of endless login loops. It clears the cache for that specific app without messing with your other Spaces.

To clear an app’s stored data:

  1. Open the app in Shift.
  2. Click the View site information icon View site information.svg in the address bar.
  3. Select Site settings.
  4. Click Delete data.

Then reload the app and try again.

4. Add a second copy of the app to Shift Browser

Shift lets you stack multiple accounts for the same app. Adding a second instance helps you see if the problem is tied to a specific broken cache.

  1. Add the same app again from the Add to Shift _+_.svg menu. (keep the original app)
  2. Log into the new instance.
  3. If the issue is resolved, you can delete the original instance.

If the new one works perfectly, you can safely delete the original instance. Since each native integration lives inside its own isolated cookie environment, the new one will start completely fresh.

5. Clear the global cache and cookies in Shift Browser

If several sidebar apps are acting up at the same time, you might need a broader cleanup. This action will sign you out of most accounts, so make sure you are ready to log back in.

  1. Go to Quick Settings (gear icon Quick Settings.svg
  2. Then go to Advanced Settings.
  3. Click Privacy and Security.
  4. Select Delete Browsing Data.
  5. Choose a time range of "All time".
  6. Click Delete data.

Note: This will sign you out of your email accounts and any apps/extensions that rely on them.

6. Confirm if the bug is Shift Browser-specific

Sometimes a web app is just having a bad day on its own server. To test this theory:

  • Open the same app in a regular browser (e.g., Chrome, Safari)
  • Check if the problem persists

If the issue persists in other browsers, the external app provider has a bug they need to resolve on their end.
