How to perform partial & full data reset (Windows)

If you’re having trouble with Shift, like seeing a blank screen, Shift not responding, or crashing, you can try resetting the app data. A reset can often fix many issues. You can do a partial reset or a full reset. Even if your problem isn’t listed here, give these steps a try!😎

How to perform a partial app data reset 

A partial reset keeps your emails, apps, and extensions but clears your open web tabs. This can help fix issues like Shift not working or showing a blank screen. Follow the step-by-step instructions below: 👇

  1. Close Shift completely by pressing Ctrl + Q.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete on your keyboard and open Task Manager.
  3. Select Details in the top menu
  4. Type "Shift" on your keyboard to find Shift.exe.
  5. Right-click each Shift.exe process and click End Task until there are no more Shift processes.
  6. Open the Windows File Explorer
    1. For Windows 10:
      1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      2. Click View, then Options, then Change folder and search options.
      3. In the View tab, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
    2. For Windows 11:
      1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      2. Click View, then Show, then Hidden items.
  7. Go to this folder: C:\Users[Your Name]\AppData\Local. (might be the name of your computer or similar)
  8. Open the Shift folder, then open UserData > Default.
  9. Right-click the Sessions folder and delete it.
  10. Re-open Shift.

How to perform a full app data reset 

If a partial reset doesn’t work, try a full reset. But remember, a full reset will remove most of your Shift settings, so you’ll need to set them up again.

After a full reset, you will need to:

The steps for a full data reset are almost identical to a partial data reset, with a few key differences. Follow the step-by-step instructions outlined below:

  1. Close Shift completely by pressing Ctrl + Q.
  2. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open Task Manager.
  3. Click on Details and type "Shift" on your keyboard.
  4. Right-click each Shift.exe process and click End Task.
  5. Open File Explorer.
    1. For Windows 10:
      1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      2. Click View, then Options, then Change folder and search options.
      3. In the View tab, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives.
    2. For Windows 11:
      1. Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
      2. Click View, then Show, then Hidden items.
  6. Go to this folder: C:\Users[Your Name]\AppData\Local.
  7. Open the Shift folder
  8. Find the User Data folder, right-click it, and delete it.
  9. Re-open Shift and log in.
