How to perform a full app data reset (Mac)

You can fix crashing or blank screens in Shift Browser by performing a full app data reset. This process clears your local cache and refreshes the application on your Mac. While it requires you to sign back in and re-add some settings, it's the most effective way to solve deep technical issues.

Note: A full app data reset removes locally stored data. Passwords, payment methods, custom app icons, and browser extensions are not currently included in Sync and should be backed up before proceeding.

Before you reset: Check your Sync settings

You don't want to lose your hard work. Shift'll save your apps and Spaces if you have Sync active. Before you start the reset, verify your settings:

  1. Click the gear icon to open Quick Settings.Quick Settings.svg

  2. Select Advanced settings.

  3. In Account & Preferences, make sure Sync is turned on.

If Sync isn't on, your setup'll revert to a blank state after the reset.

Important: Sync currently does not save passwords, payment methods, custom app icons, or browser extensions. Before performing a full app data reset, export any passwords you wish to keep and make note of any saved payment methods or customizations you may need to recreate afterward.

How to perform a full app data reset on Mac

Follow these steps to clear the local data from your computer and get Shift running again. Because this is a full reset, you'll need to re-import passwords and add your Chrome extensions back once you're finished.

  1. Ensure Shift is fully closed and not running in your activity monitor (press Cmd Q to fully quit Shift if Shift is not in full-screen mode).
  2. Pull up your system-wide search and look for Activity Monitor, then end any Shift processes.
  3. Click on your desktop to move the focus away from any other apps, then choose "Go" from the top menu.
  4. With the Go menu open, hold down the option key to reveal the hidden folder Library, then click on it to open.
  5. Double-click on the "Application Support" folder to open it.
  6. Find the Shift folder, then right-click on it and select "Delete".
  7. Re-launch Shift and sign back in with your Primary Shift Account.

Note: You don't have to go through onboarding. Simply sign in through the Sign in prompt. Once signed in, your synced Spaces and apps will be restored, but you'll need to re-import passwords, re-add extensions, restore custom icons, and re-enter any saved payment methods.
