Troubleshooting login issues

Experiencing an error or login loop when trying to login to your Shift or Community forum account? Do you already have a Shift account from an older version (like v9) and are trying to sign in to the new version, Shift browser? We’ve got answers! 

Why can’t I complete my login? 

Shift’s login system has been designed to follow the same path you chose when you first logged in to Shift. In other words, if you selected the “Sign in with Google” option when first setting up your account, you will always select that option to complete your sign in. However, if you select the Email option (even if you have a gmail account), you will always need to sign in via the Email option. 

Troubleshooting login loops & errors

1. If you’ve hit an error or find yourself in a login loop, try selecting a different option than what you’ve been trying to login through. 

For example, if you have been selecting “Continue with Microsoft” but keep ending up back on the login screen or receive an error, try entering your login credentials in the Email fields instead. This should result in a successful login. 

2. If you have chosen to login via one of these options: 

  • Continue with Apple 
  • Sign in with Google
  • Continue with Microsoft 

DO NOT use the ‘Forgot Password’ option as this is only for those who have chosen to login via the Email/Password option. 

The visual below shows a user stuck in a login loop trying to login through the “Continue with Microsoft” option, however to successfully login they need to enter their credentials in the Email fields. 

Troubleshooting errors with the Email login option 

Some users may experience an error when signing in or creating an account through the email/password login option. 

Selecting this option for sign-in will generate a verification code. If that code is not used within 24 hours, it will expire, leading to errors when signing in. 

To generate a new code and complete your sign-in setup: 

  1. Click the ‘Forgot password’ link on the login page. 
  2. A new code will be generated and sent to the email being used for login. 
  3. Use the code within 24 hours to confirm your account. 

This should resolve your login error and allow you to access your Shift account. 

Signing in to Shift browser after coming from an older version

We recommend following the steps below when signing in to Shift browser for the first time if you’re coming from an older version of Shift (like v9), or if you’re installing Shift on a second computer. 

New and existing Shift users will be presented with an Onboarding setup flow the first time they install the new version of Shift. We recommend skipping the ‘Sign in’ option presented on the first page of the Onboarding and signing in a different way, especially if you’re coming from a previous version of Shift or are installing Shift on a second computer. 

  1. Complete the Onboarding or skip through the steps. 
  2. Click the gear icon to open Quick Settings
  3. Click Advanced Settings
  4. Go to Accounts and Preferences
  5. Click the Sign in option on this page. 
  6. If you are coming from a previous version of Shift, make sure you select either the “Sign in with Google” or “Continue with Microsoft” option. The option you choose should be the same option you use to sign in to your older version of Shift. Do not enter your login via the ‘Email’ option fields. 
  7. We also recommend turning on Sync at this time to ensure changes to your setup and activities in your browser are saved.
