AI Chat automatically saves your conversations so you can come back to them later. Chat history makes it easy to continue longer tasks, revisit past answers, or reuse information without starting over.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
How chat history works
Each AI Chat session is automatically saved as a separate conversation in the history. A session includes your questions, AI responses, and the full conversation transcript. Chat history is tied to the specific Shift window where the chat was created, not across the entire browser. If you use multiple Shift windows, each one has its own separate history. Conversations do not sync between windows, which helps keep chats connected to the browsing context they were created in. Closing a tab with AI Chat open ends the active session, but the conversation itself remains saved and can be reopened from history at any time.
Opening chat history
You can open chat history by clicking the history icon in the top-left corner of the AI Chat interface. This works whether AI Chat is open as a full-screen chat in a tab or as a side-panel chat alongside a website.
Browsing and searching history
In the history panel, you can browse your saved conversations to find recent and older chats. You can also search using keywords from your questions or AI responses, which is helpful if you remember part of a conversation but not when it happened. Each item in the list represents one complete AI Chat session.
Reopening a conversation
To return to a previous chat, click the conversation in the history list.
When you reopen a conversation, the full message history loads back into AI Chat, allowing you to continue where you left off. Reopened conversations behave like active sessions, so you can ask follow-up questions and keep the discussion going, rather than viewing them as read-only records.
Deleting a conversation
If you no longer need a saved chat, you can remove it from history by right-clicking the conversation and selecting Delete. Deleting a conversation permanently removes it from chat history and cannot be undone.
What happens when you close things
Closing an AI Chat tab ends the active chat session in that tab, but it does not delete the conversation. The full chat is still saved in history and can be reopened later.
Closing a Shift window closes all active AI Chat sessions within that window. Any conversations that were previously saved in that window remain available in its chat history.
Opening a new Shift window starts with a fresh AI Chat history. Conversations from other windows are not visible, since chat history does not sync across windows.
Tips for using chat history
Chat history is especially useful for resuming longer research, writing, or planning tasks. You can reopen past chats to copy answers or explanations, or use search to find information instead of repeating the same question.
