Shift AI automatically saves your conversations so you can revisit them later. Chat history makes it easy to resume long-running tasks, review past answers, or reuse information without having to start your prompts from scratch.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
How Chat History Works
Each Shift AI session is automatically saved as a separate conversation transcript. However, it is important to understand how Shift handles history across your workspace:
Window-Specific Isolation: Chat history is tied exclusively to the specific Shift window where the conversation was started. It does not sync globally across multiple open Shift windows. This design choice helps keep your AI context connected directly to the specific project or browsing workspace you are currently working in.
Session Persistence: Closing an active AI Chat tab ends that active session, but the entire conversation remains securely saved in that window's history.
Accessing and Managing Your History
Opening Your History
To view your past conversations, click the History icon located in the top-left corner of the Shift AI interface. This panel can be accessed whether you are using AI Chat in a full-screen tab or inside the sidebar panel alongside a website.
Browsing and Searching
Inside the history panel, you can scroll through a chronological list of past sessions. If you are looking for something specific, use the search bar to search for keywords contained within your past questions or the AI's responses.
Reopening a Conversation
Click on any past conversation in the list to reload it. Reopened conversations are fully interactive—they do not load as read-only archives. You can immediately type follow-up questions and continue the conversation exactly where you left off.
Deleting a conversation
If you want to permanently clear a chat, right-click the conversation in the history list and select Delete.
Note: Deleting a conversation is permanent and cannot be undone.
What Happens When You Close Windows or Tabs?
To ensure you never accidentally lose your work, keep these rules in mind:
Closing an AI Chat Tab: Ends the active session in that specific tab, but the full transcript is safely saved to the history panel.
Closing a Shift Window: Closes all active AI Chat sessions running inside it. When you reopen that specific window later, those past conversations will still be available in its history panel.
Opening a New Shift Window: Launches a completely fresh window workspace. Because history does not sync across separate windows, the history panel in this new window will start blank.
Tips for Best Results
Resume Deep Work: Use history to pick up multi-step research, coding, or copywriting projects right where you left off days prior.
Prevent Duplicate Prompts: Instead of asking the AI to rewrite or re-explain a concept you've already covered, use the history search bar to quickly pull up past answers and copy the information you need.
