You can open AI Chat directly from the omnibox (the address bar at the top of your Shift browser). Depending on your current setup, AI Chat appears in one of two visual layouts: Shimmer mode or Dropdown mode. Only one mode can be active at a time.

Both layouts allow you to seamlessly open websites, run web searches, or consult the AI without ever leaving your keyboard.

**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users. 
 

Comparison of Modes

What You'll See As You Type

When you click into the omnibox and begin typing, a dropdown list opens with intelligent suggestions. These suggestions include standard web search, bookmarks, browser history, and AI Chat.

Shift automatically evaluates your input in real-time to determine your intent:

• Question Intent: If your input looks like a natural language question, AI Chat is surfaced prominently.

• Navigation Intent: If your input looks like a standard keyword search, app name, or URL (e.g., "Gmail login"), standard search and site navigation take priority.

Shimmer Mode (Default)

In Shimmer mode, AI Chat does not sit inside the dropdown list as a selectable item. Instead, the omnibox displays a persistent shortcut hint on the right side that reads Ask AI [Tab].

• The Shimmer Effect: When Shift determines that your query is a perfect fit for an AI response, this shortcut text will briefly glow or "shimmer." This is purely a visual cue—AI Chat is always available via the shortcut even if it is not actively shimmering.

• How to Open: Press Tab while the omnibox is active. AI Chat will open immediately without requiring you to press Enter.

• Smart Tab Behavior: If you are on a blank New Tab page, AI Chat opens in your current tab. If you are actively viewing a website, AI Chat automatically opens in a new tab so you never lose your current webpage.

Dropdown Mode

In Dropdown mode, AI Chat is integrated directly into the vertical suggestion list beneath the omnibox and behaves like a traditional browser suggestion.

• Dynamic Ordering: When you type a question, AI Chat is dynamically listed above standard web search. When you type a destination or basic keyword, standard Search appears first, and AI Chat moves below it.

• How to Open: Use your mouse to click the AI Chat line item, or use your arrow keys / Tab key to cycle down to highlight the option, then press Enter.

Advanced Behaviors

Inline Autocomplete

Inline autocomplete occurs when the omnibox predicts your destination and fills in the remaining characters in light gray text directly inside the input field.

• In Shimmer Mode: Pressing Tab while autocomplete is visible will first accept the completed text and then immediately launch AI Chat using that full query.

• In Dropdown Mode: You must first press Enter or the Right Arrow to accept the autocompleted text before navigating down the dropdown to select AI Chat.

The "Top Suggestion"

When the omnibox is highly confident about the exact site you want to visit, it promotes that single result to the absolute top of the list as a Top Suggestion. A Top Suggestion will always appear above both standard Search and AI Chat, regardless of which mode you are using. If no single result meets this high confidence threshold, options are displayed in a neutral order.

Keyboard Shortcut Summary

• Enter: Opens the currently highlighted dropdown item or executes a standard web search.

• Tab: Cycles downward through the dropdown items in Dropdown mode, or instantly opens AI Chat in Shimmer mode.

• Escape (Esc): Closes the dropdown menu and exits your current omnibox interaction.
