Having trouble with the new intelligent omnibox? This guide addresses the most common questions in simple, user-friendly language and explains what’s happening behind the scenes, along with what you can try.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
“Why didn’t AI show?” or “Why didn’t it shimmer?”
Whenever the omnibox is active, you’ll see an “Ask AI” shortcut. In the default setup, called “Shimmer mode,” that shortcut is always visible, but it only shimmers when the system believes you’re asking something that’s a good fit for AI. If your query looks more like a typical website visit or standard search, AI remains in the background and does not appear.
One common reason AI does not show results is that your query appears to be a navigation or a basic search. If you type something like “YouTube,” “Facebook,” “Gmail login,” or even “best restaurants Vancouver,” the system may interpret that as a normal search or site visit. In those cases, “Search” is prioritized and AI will not shimmer.
Another reason is unclear intent. If the system is not confident whether you want AI or Search, it plays it safe and treats the query as regular search intent. AI remains visible but static, with no shimmer effect.
It is also possible that you are in “Dropdown mode” instead of “Shimmer mode.” In “Shimmer mode,” which is the default, AI appears as an “Ask AI [Tab]” shortcut outside the dropdown and may shimmer. In “Dropdown mode,” AI appears as a regular item inside the dropdown list and does not shimmer at all. If you are in “Dropdown mode,” not seeing a shimmer effect is expected behavior.
Very short inputs can also prevent shimmer. If you type only one or two characters, the system may not have enough context to confidently detect “LLM intent.” In that case, it will show regular suggestions and keep AI static until more context is provided.
“Why did Search show first?”
You will usually see a “Search with X” option, such as Google, near the top of the dropdown. Sometimes it appears first, and that is intentional. If your query looks like a classic web search, such as “weather Toronto,” “cheap flights to Mexico,” or “NBA scores,” the system treats it as standard search behavior and prioritizes “Search.” In “Dropdown mode,” Search appears above AI. In “Shimmer mode,” Search will be the first dropdown item unless there is a clearly defined “Top suggestion.”
Search may also appear first when there is no clear “Top suggestion.” All suggestions, including history and bookmarks, are scored. If none of them strongly match what you typed, the system does not artificially boost anything. In that case, “Search” ranks first.
Another reason is that your query was classified as “Non-LLM intent.” If the system determines your input looks more like a navigation or search query than a question for AI, it prioritizes “Search.” AI will either appear lower in the dropdown or remain as a static “Ask AI” shortcut in “Shimmer mode.”
“Why didn’t my frequent site appear at the top?”
Even if you visit a site every day, it will not automatically appear at the top every time. The omnibox uses a “Top suggestion” threshold to determine when something is clearly the best match. All suggestions are scored, and only if one suggestion is significantly stronger than the others and meets a confidence threshold will it be promoted to the top as the “Top suggestion.”
If nothing clearly stands out, nothing is boosted, and “Search” appears first instead. This can happen even if you frequently visit a particular site.
Sometimes your frequently visited site does not appear at the top because it did not strongly match your search. You may visit “https://mail.google.com” often, but if you type something like “gm” or “email,” that input might not be a strong enough match to push it above other suggestions.
If there is no clear winner among the suggestions, the rule is simple: proceed with the highest-ranked option. “Search” appears first, followed by your other suggestions in normal order.
Another factor is editing your query. If you start typing, see a suggestion at the top, and then backspace or change your input, the system may interpret that as a signal that you do not want that suggestion. Even if it still matches well, it may stop promoting it above everything else.
“Autocomplete didn’t show”
Inline autocomplete occurs when the omnibox completes the rest of your text in lighter or highlighted characters, allowing you to accept it with “Enter,” “Right Arrow,” or, in some cases, “Tab.”
Autocomplete only appears when the item in position number one in the dropdown is a suggestion, such as a history item or bookmark, and that suggestion starts exactly with what you typed. This is called a “prefix match.” For example, if you type “redb” and the top result is “redbrickmedia.atlassian.net,” the remainder of the text appears inline because it starts with your exact input.
Autocomplete does not appear if the top result is “Search,” because Search is not a URL or title that extends your typed text. It also will not appear if the top result does not literally begin with what you typed. For example, if you type “design” and the top result is “Figma – Intelligent Omnibox Board,” the title does not start with “design,” so autocomplete will not show.
Even if a lower-ranked item is a perfect prefix match, autocomplete will not appear unless that item is in position number one. Ranking matters.
Mode also affects behavior. In “Shimmer mode,” pressing “Tab” can accept autocomplete and open AI. In “Dropdown mode,” “Tab” cycles between results instead. To accept autocomplete in that mode, you need to use “Enter” or “Right Arrow.”
Quick tips
Although most of the omnibox logic runs automatically, there are a few simple steps you can take to improve results:
- If you want AI to shimmer more often, try typing full questions instead of short keyword phrases. Queries that begin with “How do I…,” “Explain…,” or “What is…” are more likely to be recognized as “LLM intent.”
- If you want a specific site to rank higher, consistently select it from the dropdown. Over time, the system can learn from your behavior and adjust suggestion rankings.
- If autocomplete does not appear when you expect it, check whether the first result actually starts exactly with what you typed. Inline autocomplete requires a strict “prefix match” at position 1. Also, make sure you are using “Enter” or “Right Arrow” to accept it, and remember that “Tab” only accepts autocomplete in “Shimmer mode.”
- If you are unsure which mode you are in, look at how AI is displayed. In “Shimmer mode,” AI appears outside the dropdown as “Ask AI [Tab]” and may glow. In “Dropdown mode,” AI appears as a regular item inside the dropdown list and does not shimmer.
- If something still feels inconsistent, it is usually due to how the system interpreted your intent at that moment. Small wording differences can affect how a query is classified and how suggestions are ranked, which is expected behavior in an intelligent omnibox.
