Having trouble with the new intelligent omnibox? This guide addresses the most common questions in simple language, explains what’s happening behind the scenes, and provides quick tips to try.
AI features are currently released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
“Why didn’t AI show?” or “Why didn’t it shimmer?”
Whenever the omnibox is active, you’ll see an “Ask AI” shortcut. In the default Shimmer mode, that shortcut is always visible, but it only "shimmers" (glows) when the system detects a query that is a good fit for an AI response.
If AI is staying static, it is usually due to one of the following:
Navigation or Basic Search Intent: If you type standard sites or keywords like "YouTube," "Facebook," "Gmail login," or "best restaurants Vancouver," the system prioritizes standard web search.
Unclear Intent: If the system isn't confident whether you want an AI response or a web search, it plays it safe and defaults to a regular search.
Input is Too Short: If you type only one or two characters, the system doesn't have enough context to confidently detect "AI intent."
You are in Dropdown Mode: In Dropdown mode, AI appears as a regular text item inside the dropdown list and never shimmers. (Shimmering only happens in the default Shimmer mode, where AI sits outside the dropdown as an
Ask AI [Tab]shortcut).
“Why did Search show first?”
You will usually see a “Search with [Your Engine]” option near the top of your dropdown. It intentionally takes the number one spot under these conditions:
Classic Web Searches: Queries like "weather Toronto," "cheap flights to Mexico," or "NBA scores" are classified as "Non-LLM intent" and automatically prioritize standard search.
No Clear "Top Suggestion": Shift scores all possible matches (history, bookmarks, etc.). If no single item strongly beats out the others, the system won't artificially boost a result; it defaults to putting "Search" first.
“Why didn’t my frequent site appear at the top?”
Even if you visit a site every day, it won’t automatically unlock the top spot every time.
The Confidence Threshold: Shift uses a strict scoring system. A site is only promoted to the very top as a "Top Suggestion" if it is significantly stronger than all other possibilities.
Keyword Mismatches: If you visit
https://mail.google.comdaily, typing just "gm" or "email" might not be a strong enough algorithmic match to trigger a top promotion.Query Editing: If you start typing, see your favorite site at the top, but then hit backspace or change your text, the system notes this as a signal that you didn't want that suggestion and may stop promoting it.
“Autocomplete didn’t show up”
Inline autocomplete (where the omnibox finishes your text in light gray characters) allows you to quickly accept a suggestion using Enter, the Right Arrow, or Tab.
If it isn't appearing, keep these rules in mind:
It Requires a Strict "Prefix Match": Autocomplete only works if the suggestion begins exactly with what you typed. Typing "redb" will autocomplete "redbrickmedia.atlassian.net". However, typing "design" will not autocomplete "Figma – Intelligent Omnibox Board", because the title doesn't start with the word "design".
Rank Matters: Autocomplete only triggers for the item sitting in Position #1. If your perfect match is sitting in position #2 or #3, it will not autocomplete.
Know Your Shortcuts: In Shimmer mode, pressing
Tabaccepts the autocomplete and opens AI. In Dropdown mode, pressingTabsimply cycles through the list—you must useEnteror theRight Arrowto accept the autocomplete.
Quick Tips to Improve Your Experience
While the omnibox runs automatically, you can easily train it to better suit your workflow:
Ask Full Questions: If you want the AI to shimmer and trigger more often, use natural language. Queries starting with "How do I...", "Explain...", or "What is..." immediately signal AI intent.
Be Consistent to Rank Higher: If you want a specific site to claim the top spot, consistently select it from the dropdown list when it appears. Over time, the system learns your habits and boosts its score.
Check Your Mode: Unsure which mode you're in? Look at the "Ask AI" button. If it's outside the dropdown and has a
[Tab]indicator, you're in Shimmer mode. If it's just a line item inside the dropdown list, you're in Dropdown mode.
