You can customize AI Chat in Shift Browser to match your personal style and professional needs. By adjusting your "About You" preferences, you can set a specific tone, role, and name for your native assistant. These settings ensure your AI interactions feel personal and stay aligned with your daily workflow.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
How to access AI Chat settings
To change how your assistant looks and behaves, you'll need to open the settings panel within the chat interface.
- Open AI Chat.
- Click the three-dot icon (overflow menu) in the top-right corner of the AI Chat panel.
- Select Settings from the menu.
Alternatively, you can access them by:
- Open Quick Settings.
- Go to the Shift AI toggles. If AI Chat is toggled ON, you should see a settings icon beside the toggle.
- Click the Settings icon.
Adjust General settings in Shift Browser
The General tab helps you control the technical and visual aspects of your chat experience. From here, you can manage:
- Location sharing: Toggle this to help the AI give you local weather, area specific, or time-sensitive answers.
- Customize the keyboard shortcut: Change the keyboard shortcut to open AI or use the default.
- Font and Font size: Change the text appearance to make your conversations easier to read.
- Line height: Adjust the height of the lines within the messages AI Chat provides.
Customize AI Skills
AI Skills act like specialized macros for your AI Chat. They streamline your interactions by saving custom prompts for quick access. You can use these to manage recurring tasks such as summarizing content, explaining complex topics, or performing fact checks.
- Configure your skills: Navigate to your AI Chat settings to create and manage your shortcuts.
- Triggering tasks: Use commands like /summarize, /explain, /fact_check, or /quiz_me to launch your saved prompts.
- Context matters: Remember that Skills require content to function. If you trigger a summary without an active page or chat history, the AI won't have enough data to process your request.
- One at a time: You can't stack multiple skills within a single chat session. Each command runs individually.
Personalize the "About You" tab
The About You section is where you give Shift AI more context about who you are. This is also where you can find your Chat Client ID. Shift AI uses these details to tailor every response to your specific situation.
Set your identity and role
Adding your name lets AI Chat address you personally. You can also specify your job title, role, or industry. This gives Shift AI better context for your day-to-day tasks, like drafting emails or summarizing industry reports.
Customize the AI response tone
You can use the 'How should Shift AI respond?' field to set a permanent tone. Whether you want your assistant to be formal and brief or friendly and creative, this field tells the assistant which language style to use for every prompt.
Add extra context
The 'Anything else Shift AI should know?' field is the perfect place for deeper customization. You can include details about your favorite tools, specific project goals, or formatting preferences. This helps ensure your Shift AI experience is completely unique to you.
Using AI Memory for consistent context
Shift AI features a Memory function that keeps important information accessible across every new chat session. It acts as a passive, persistent layer of knowledge that saves you from re-explaining who you are or what you do.
- Persistent knowledge: Add details like your job title or preferred writing style to your Memory. If you tell Shift you're a Customer Support Manager, it'll remember that role even when you start a fresh conversation.
- Importing data: You can import memories from other platforms by pasting them into the Import Memories section.
- Sandbox flexibility: While the "About You" tab handles specific profile details, the Memory section provides a sandbox for broader, free-form information.
- Limitations: Note that there is a 1,025-character limit for each new memory entry. Currently, you cannot import external files directly into your Memory.
