What to do if Shift Browser is crashing

  • Updated

Contact our support team with your crash data to help us resolve app crashes quickly. If you're experiencing crashes, it's easy to get help.

We just need to gather some quick data from your device. Depending on whether your browser can open right now or won't launch at all, you can use the step-by-step guides below to grab your details and send them over.

Step 1: Gather Logs

If Shift is running

If your app is experiencing intermittent crashes but you can still open it, you don't have to look deep in your computer folders. You can pull a unique Crash ID straight from the browser window.

  1. Open Shift.
  2. Click into the Intelligent Omnibox (the search bar) at the top of your screen.
  3. Type chrome://crashes into the Intelligent Omnibox and press Enter.
  4. Locate the most recent crash listed on the page and copy the unique Crash ID string.
  5. Paste that Crash ID into your text reply to our support team.

If your browser won't load or run, you can't access the omnibox to find an ID. Instead, you can grab the raw crash files (.dmp) that live locally on your hard drive.

If Shift will not launch

Windows Instructions

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run window.
  2. Copy and paste this exact path into the text box: %localappdata%\Shift\User Data\Crashpad\reports
  3. Press Enter to open the folder directory.
  4. Locate the most recent files inside that folder and attach them directly to your email reply.

macOS Instructions

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Click the Go menu in the top menu bar and select Go to Folder.
  3. Paste this exact path into the search box: ~/Library/Application Support/Shift/Browser/Crashpad
  4. Press Enter to open the folder directory.
  5. Locate the most recent files inside that folder and attach them directly to your email reply.

Step 2: Information to include in your ticket

To help our team replicate and resolve the issue on our end, please provide as much context as possible when you contact us. Along with your logs, please share:

  • Steps to replicate: Write down the exact steps you took right before the application crashed.
  • Video recording: If it's possible, record a short video of your screen that shows the error or crash happening in real-time.
