The Speed Test app in Shift allows you to check your network performance instantly without leaving your workspace. It measures how quickly your connection can download and upload media assets—such as high-definition videos, large email attachments, and cloud documents—so you can verify if you are getting the bandwidth you pay for.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Navigate to the Speed Test App
Launch Shift on your computer.
Locate and click the Speed Test icon on your sidebar layout to open the monitoring dashboard.
Note: If you do not see the Speed Test icon inside your current layout, you can quickly integrate it into your workspace by following our Guide to Adding Apps in Shift.
Step 2: Start the Connection Test
Once the dashboard opens, you will see a prominent Go button in the center of the application interface.
Click Go to begin analyzing your network connection.
Allow the tool 30 to 45 seconds to establish server paths and complete its diagnostic checks.
Step 3: Interpret Your Results
Once the diagnosis finishes, the application will display three core performance metrics:
Download Speed: Measures how fast data travels from the internet to your computer. High download speeds are vital for smooth video streaming, loading asset-heavy websites, and syncing large cloud files.
Upload Speed: Measures how quickly your machine can send data out to the internet. This metric directly impacts the stability of your video conferencing calls, outbound email attachments, and real-time screen sharing.
Ping (Latency): Measures your network's response time in milliseconds (ms). Lower numbers represent a tighter, more responsive connection—crucial for clear, lag-free voice over IP (VoIP) communication.
Viewing History and Sharing Results
Monitor Network Stability: Scroll to the bottom of the Speed Test window to view your automated Results History. This log records your past performance data so you can spot if your internet speed drops consistently at specific times of the day.
Share Your Results: To share your bandwidth data with an IT administrator or your Internet Service Provider (ISP), click the Share icon located next to your completed test totals. You can copy the direct result link or export a summary to send via email.
