Fix Shift update problems & failed updates

  • Updated

You can fix Shift update issues by reinstalling the app, checking your firewall settings, or rebooting your computer. Most update failures happen because of missing local files or restricted network permissions. Following these steps ensures your Shift Browser stays current with the latest speed and security features.

Reinstall Shift Browser

Sometimes files on your computer get corrupted or go missing. A fresh installation is the fastest way to get Shift back on track.

  1. Uninstall the current version of Shift from your Windows or Mac device.

  2. Go to the official Shift website to download the latest version.

  3. Open the installer and follow the prompts to finish the setup.

  4. If you don't have permission to install software, ask your system administrator for help.

Check antivirus, firewall, & parental control settings

Security software can sometimes block Shift from connecting to our update servers. You'll need to make sure your settings aren't stopping the browser from going online.

  • Open your antivirus or parental control settings.

  • Check that "updates.shiftapis.com" is on your allowed list.

  • Confirm that general software updates aren't blocked by your firewall.

Restart your computer to finish the update

A simple reboot often clears out temporary glitches that stop an update from finishing. It's a quick way to make sure Shift starts fresh. Once Shift has restarted, you can try running the update again.

How to reboot a Windows computer

  1. Click the Start Menu: It's the Windows icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen.

  2. Click the Power Icon: You'll see this near the bottom of the Start menu.

  3. Select “Restart”: Click Restart from the list of options (Sleep, Shut down, Restart).

How to reboot a Mac computer

  1. Click the Apple menu: In the top-left corner of your screen, click the Apple icon.
  2. Select "Restart": From the menu that appears, choose the "Restart" option.
  3. Confirm: If a pop-up window appears asking you to confirm, click "Restart" again.
