You can manage controls in Shift Browser by using the Builder to drag and drop functional buttons like Home, Back, Print, and Downloads into your bars. These tools act as native integrations that live inside your workspace, allowing you to trigger essential actions with a single click.
What are controls?
Controls are the small but mighty buttons that help you navigate the web. Unlike a standard browser, where these buttons are stuck at the top, Shift lets you move them to the top, bottom, left, or right. They're designed to help you stay in your flow without searching for basic functions
How to add or remove your controls
When you're ready to change your setup, you'll use the Builder. It's the specialized tool in Shift that makes customization easy.
Adding a control
Open Quick Settings by clicking the gear icon.
Go to the Custom Layout section
Select Build Your Browser
Go to the Controls section.
-
Drag a control (e.g., Home, Back) into any existing bar.
Each control can only be added once to prevent duplicates.
Removing a control
- Go back to Quick Settings.
- Open the Custom Layout section
- Select Build Your Browser
- Go to the Controls section.
- Drag the control back to the Custom Layout panel.
Moving and rearranging your tools
You aren't limited to where you first place a button. You can drag and drop controls within a single bar to change their order, or move them to a completely different bar to better fit your rhythm.
Single use: Each control can only be used once in your layout to keep things clean.
Compatibility: Some buttons might not fit in specialized bars, like a bar meant only for bookmarks.
Grid logic: If you move many controls at once, you might need to adjust your spacers or grids to keep everything aligned.
Drag and drop controls within a bar, or move them to a different bar.
Controls can be placed in any bar that supports the layout format.
Don't lose your Quick Settings
We strongly recommend keeping the Quick Settings icon visible in your Space. It's your primary way to access the Builder. If you've removed it by mistake, don't worry. You can find it again by hovering at the top of your screen to reveal the Safety Bar.
