Shift Browser omnibox missing? How to search and restore it

  • Updated

If your omnibox is missing in Shift Browser, you can restore it by opening Quick Settings, selecting Build Your Browser, and dragging the Omnibox control back into your layout. You can also search instantly without a visible bar by using the Cmd/Ctrl + L keyboard shortcut.

Why your search bar might be hidden

In Shift Browser, we don't believe in a one-size-fits-all setup. Many users choose to hide the omnibox, address bar, or search bar to create a "minimalist" Space. This helps you stay focused on your work without the distraction of a cluttered UI. It's all about making Shift feel built for you.

How to search without a visible omnibox

You don't need a search bar on your screen to navigate the web. Shift is designed for flow, so you can call up your search tools exactly when you need them.

  1. Press Cmd + L (Mac) or Ctrl + L (Windows) on your keyboard.

  2. The search bar will appear instantly.

  3. Type your query or URL and press Enter.

  4. The bar disappears once you've made your choice, letting you jump right back into your deep work.

How to add the omnibox back to Shift Browser

If you prefer having a permanent search bar, you can add it back using the Builder. The Builder is a specialized app that lives in your sidebar and gives you total control over where your tools live.

  1. Click the gear iconQuick Settings.svg to open Quick Settings.

  2. Select Build Your Browser.

  3. Go to the Controls section in the menu.

  4. Locate the Omnibox icon.

  5. Drag and drop the Omnibox into any bar at the top, bottom, or sides of your layout.

Tips for a cleaner Space

Shift isn't just a standard browser tab. It's a workspace that adapts to your rhythm. If you're looking for even more ways to streamline your day, try these features:

  • Hide your bars: Use the Builder to remove sidebars entirely when you're in a "Deep Work" Space.

  • Shortcut master: Use keyboard shortcuts for everything so you can keep your layout 100% button-free.
