Shift Browser omnibox (search bar) missing: How to search and restore it

  • Updated

If the omnibox (search bar) is missing in Shift Browser, you can restore it from Quick Settings > Build your Browser by dragging the omnibox back into your layout. You can also search without a visible omnibox by pressing Cmd + L (Mac) or Ctrl + L (Windows).

Why the omnibox is hidden

The omnibox may be hidden if you customized your browser layout. Shift gives you control over which browser controls appear, so you can build a layout that matches how you work.

Search without a visible omnibox

You can still search the web even when the omnibox is hidden.

  1. Press Cmd + L (Mac) or Ctrl + L (Windows).
  2. Type a search or URL.
  3. Press Enter.

Restore the omnibox

If you want the omnibox to stay visible, you can add it back using the Builder.

  1. Open Quick Settings. Quick Settings.svg
  2. Select Build your Browser.
  3. Open the Controls section.
  4. Find the omnibox control.
  5. Drag the omnibox to the top, bottom, or side of your browser layout.

Tips for a simpler layout

If you prefer a cleaner browser layout, you can also:

  • Remove browser bars you don't use with the Builder.
  • Use keyboard shortcuts to access browser controls without keeping them visible.
