Shift is designed to help you organize your work, apps, and projects in a way that fits how you work. By using Spaces, apps, app shortcuts, bookmarks, tab groups, themes, and multiple windows together, you can create a setup that's easy to navigate and tailored to your workflow.
1. Create Spaces for different parts of your day
Spaces help you separate different browsing contexts. For example, you can create separate Spaces for work, personal browsing, hobbies, or individual projects.
- Click the + icon in your setup.
- Select Add Space.
- Enter a name for your Space.
- Open the new Space.
Once you've created your Spaces, you can tailor the apps, bookmarks, tabs, and appearance of each one to match how you use it.
2. Connect your email to a Space
One way to organize your setup is to give each Space its own email account. For example, you might use one Space for work and another for personal use, each with its own inbox.
You can also set your email as an Anchored App so it opens automatically whenever you open that Space.
- Open the Space where you want to add your email.
- Click the + icon and select Add App.
- Search for your email provider, such as Gmail or Outlook.
- Select Add.
- Right-click the email app and select Set Anchored App to make it the default app for that Space.
3. Choose between Apps and Custom Apps
Shift Browser lets you add both Apps and Custom Apps to your setup.
Apps
Apps are available in the App Library and are optimized for Shift Browser. They support features such as notifications and multiple accounts where available.
Custom Apps
If an app isn't available in the App Library, you can add almost any website as a Custom App by entering its URL.
Add an app
- Click the + icon.
- Select Add App or Add Custom App.
- Follow the prompts to add your app.
Note: If you switch templates, your apps move to the primary app area in the new layout.
4. Use app shortcuts across Spaces
Not every app needs to belong to just one Space. App shortcuts give you quick access to apps you use across your setup.
For example, if you use the same communication or productivity tool throughout your day, you can make it available across your Spaces instead of adding it separately to each one.
When adding an app, use its Space shortcut setting to choose where you want the shortcut to appear.
Use All when you want the app shortcut available across all your Spaces, or None when you only want the app within its Space.
5. Organize bookmarks by Space
Each Space has its own Bookmarks Bar. There isn't one global Bookmarks Bar shared across your Spaces.
This lets you tailor your bookmarks to each Space. For example, your Work Space can have bookmarks for work resources, while your Personal Space can have a completely different set of bookmarks.
To learn how to add and manage bookmarks, see All About Bookmarks in Shift.
6. Use tab groups to organize related tabs
Tab groups give you another way to organize the tabs you're using within a Space. Use them to group related tabs together without creating a separate Space for every task or topic.
For example, you could use one Space for work, then create tab groups for different projects or tasks within that Space.
To learn how to create and manage tab groups, see How to Manage Tabs in Shift Browser.
7. Customize your Space themes
You can give Spaces different theme colors to make them easier to recognize at a glance.
- Open the Space you want to customize.
- Open Quick Settings.
- Go to Personalization.
- Choose the theme color you want to use.
Repeat these steps for your other Spaces if you want each one to have a different look.
8. Work in multiple windows
You can open multiple Shift Browser windows to work in different Spaces or projects at the same time.
To open a new window:
- Right-click the Shift Browser icon and select New Window.
- Press ⌘ + N (Mac) or Ctrl + N (Windows).
Important: Tabs don't sync between windows. If you close a window, any unsaved tabs in that window will be lost.
