Shift AI in Shift Browser understands your current page, so you can get answers without switching tabs. It uses "context chips" to pull info from your active website, highlighted text, or other open tabs. This native integration lets you summarize content and find citations directly inside your workspace.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
Understanding context chips
Context chips are small labels in the Shift AI input area. They show you exactly what information the AI is using to answer your question. Since Shift AI's a specialized app that lives in your sidebar, it stays page-aware as you browse.
Types of context you'll see:
- Site context: This chip appears on the website you're currently viewing.
- Selected text: This appears when you highlight a specific paragraph on a page.
- Tab mentions: You can add other open tabs by using @ mentions.
How to use site and text context
When you open Shift AI while looking at a website, it automatically adds that page as a context chip. You don't need to paste links or explain the topic: the AI already knows.
If you highlight text before opening the chat, Shift AI'll focus on that specific section. This is perfect when you need to explain a complex sentence or summarize one part of a long article.
Managing your privacy and context
You're always in control of what Shift AI sees. To stop the AI from referencing a specific piece of info, just click the X on the chip to remove it. Once it's gone, Shift won't use that content for your current chat.
Working with links and citations
Shift AI often includes links in its responses so you can explore sources without losing your place.
Clicking links
- In full-screen chat: Clicking a link opens a split view. This lets you see the new page right next to your chat.
- In the side-panel: Links open in a new tab that stays connected to your current Space.
- Background opening: Use Cmd + Click (Mac) or Ctrl + Click (Windows) to open any link in the background.
Web search and citations
If you ask a question about current events, Shift AI will perform a web search. You'll see a message that says "Searching web..." while it works.
When the AI finds external info, it'll display citations. These clickable links show you exactly where the facts came from. If you don't see a citation, it means the response came from your page context or general knowledge.
