If AI Chat isn’t showing up or behaving as you expect, most issues can be fixed by checking your settings, internet connection, or context chips. Ensure you’re on the latest version of Shift Browser to enjoy all the newest native integrations and features.
**AI has been released to a Beta group and may not yet be available to all Shift users.
Fix a missing Shift AI icon
If you don't see the Shift AI icon next to your omnibox, the specialized app might be turned off. You can turn it back on in just a few steps.
- Open Quick Settings in Shift.
- Scroll down to find Shift AI.
- Toggle the switch to Enable Shift AI.
Note: Check that your browser is up to date, as older versions won't have the AI features.
Fix missing page or text context
Shift AI lives inside your Space and uses "context chips" to see what you're looking at. If the AI doesn't seem to know what's on your screen, check the input area for chips.
If the page chip is missing
Shift AI automatically grabs context when you open it from a website. If you open it from a blank new tab, it won't have a site to reference. To fix this, make sure you're on the website you want to discuss before you click the icon.
If the selected text chip is missing
If you highlighted text but it didn't appear in the chat, try highlighting it again. Clicking elsewhere on the page can sometimes clear your selection. You'll see a small bubble in the chat box when Shift successfully grabs your text.
Understand Shift AI layouts
Shift AI changes its look based on how you open it. This isn't a bug: it's designed to stay out of your way.
- Side Panel: Opens when you're on a website so you can chat and browse at the same time.
- Full Screen: Opens when you're on a new tab or when you click the Maximize button.
If you want a fresh, full-screen chat without any site context, hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click the Shift AI icon. This opens a dedicated tab for your chat that lives in the sidebar.
Quick reset steps
If Shift AI feels stuck, these four steps fix almost every common glitch:
- Click Try again.
- Start a New Chat.
- Close and reopen the panel.
- Restart Shift.
- Quit Shift
- Close any instances of Shift in Task Manager/ Activity Monitor
- Open Shift again

- Whether you were on a new tab or a website,
