All About Accessibility Settings

  • Updated

Accessibility settings are features built into software, browsers, and devices that help make them easier to use for people with disabilities or those who need adjustments for a more comfortable experience.

How to find Accessibility Settings

Follow these steps to open the Accessibility Settings settings:

  1. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Quick Settings.
  2. Scroll down and click Advanced Settings at the bottom of the menu.
  3. On the left side, you’ll see a list of setting categories. Click Accessibility.
  4. You are now in the Accessibility settings!

What You’ll Find in Accessibility Settings

Inside the Accessibility settings, you’ll see different sections that let you adjust how your system works. Each option has a toggle switch, so you can turn it on or off with a single click.

  • Live Caption – Automatically creates captions for supported languages. Toggling Live Caption ON* will open additional settings:
    • Add language options to Shift by clicking ‘Add Language’
    • Set a default language
    • Hide profanity – Toggle on or off
  • Live Translate – Automatically translates live captions. Toggling Live Translate ON* will open additional settings:
    • Select which language you would like captions to translate to
  • Caption Preferences – Customize caption size and style for Live Caption. Some apps and sites will also use these settings. Clicking into this setting will open a popup where you can:
    • Toggle captions on and off
    • Edit your caption style by adjusting text and background color, font size, and opacity
    • Preview your changes
  • Show a quick highlight on the focused object – Toggle on or off
  • Navigate pages with a text cursor – To turn caret browsing on or off, use shortcut F7.
  • Get image descriptions from Google – If an image doesn’t have a useful description, Chrome will try to provide one for you. To create image descriptions, images are sent to Google. You’ll be prompted to confirm when turning this feature on.
  • Swipe between pages – Navigate back and forth between pages on a tab with a swipe gesture.
  • Add Accessibility features – opens the Chrome web store so you can browse for additional extensions to make your experience of Shift suited to you!

*Note: If toggling the Live Caption and Live Translate does not activate Live Captions, try going to the Caption Preferences setting, this will open a popup where you can turn them on and adjust settings.
